North Kolkata Heritage & Traditional Sabeki Puja Trail (2026)

Curator's Editorial Overview
North Kolkata is where the soul of Durga Puja was born. Walking down the century-old lanes of Bagbazar, Sovabazar, and Hatibagan feels like stepping into a vintage postcard of Bengal, where tram tracks glint beneath fairy lights and aristocratic courtyards echo with sacred dhaak beats.
Unlike the high-concept modern art of the South, North Kolkata excels in emotional devotion, authentic 'Sabeki' (traditional) idols, and deep community warmth. Here, the idol is treated as an affectionate daughter returning to her ancestral home for four golden days.
We recommend starting your North Kolkata tour late in the afternoon at Kumartuli Park to witness the idol artists at work in Kumartuli ghat, walking north to Bagbazar Sarbojanin for evening Sandhya Aarti by the Hooghly river, and winding through Sovabazar, Hatibagan, and Kasi Bose Lane.
